Eindelijk is het zover, ik ga naar Nepal! Momenteel werk ik al 7 jaar bij Simon Lévelt, koffie en thee en heb in de tussentijd aardig wat kennis opgedaan over beide producten, maar ik heb nog nooit een thee- (of koffie) plantage van dichtbij gezien. Daar gaat nu verandering in komen! Ik ga namelijk een stage doen voor 2 maanden in Nepal, niet via m’n huidige werk maar via Agriterra.

Hoe ik bij deze reis terecht ben gekomen

Voor mijn werk bij Simon Lévelt volg ik trainingen bij ITC Academy, oftewel: International Tea and Coffee Academy. Richard Schukkink, de eigenaar van ITC werkt ook als ervaringsdeskundige (ook wel: Agripooler) voor Agriterra. Al meerdere keren is hij voor hen op reis geweest om de theeboeren te adviseren over de kwaliteit van hun product. Omdat ik kenbaar had gemaakt dat ik ooit een thee-reis zou willen maken en er toevallig een vacature openstond bij Agriterra heeft hij mij voorgesteld aan dit bedrijf.

Wat is Agriterra?

Agriterra is een organisatie die boeren in het buitenland helpt doormiddel van advies en trainingen. Zij werken samen met organisaties en coöperaties in verschillende branches; van koffie tot zuivel, van honing tot bloemen en van graan tot pluimvee en in mijn geval dus thee. Agriterra heeft haar eigen trainingen ontwikkeld op het gebied van lobby en belangenbehartiging, het creëren van eigen vermogen en marketing. In 2018 adviseerde Agriterra 208 coöperaties in 17 landen. Met het programma waarmee zij werken bereiken ze mee dan 500.000 boeren.

Agriterra werkt in Nepal samen met de organisatie Central Tea Cooperation Federation (CTCF). Dit is een overkoepelende organisatie voor de thee coöperaties die samenwerken met alle theeboeren uit de regio. Deze regio ligt in het Oosten van Nepal, tegen de grens van India aan.

Mijn opdracht in Nepal

Nepal wordt gezien als een ontwikkelingsland door Nederland, je kunt je dan ook vast wel inbeelden dat het leven daar wat primitiever is. Desalniettemin maken de coöperaties die de theeboeren helpen gebruik van social media. Mijn taak is om hen te helpen hun social media beter in te zetten om uiteindelijk meer bedrijven en inkopers te vinden die de thee uit Nepal willen kopen. Daarnaast ga ik voor andere boeren (o.a. een melkboer) promotievideo’s maken.
